All 103 Force Abilities and Powers in Star Wars Explained

Force abilities in Star Wars

What is a Force Ability?

A Force ability was any power that Force-sensitive individuals could use. These abilities had many uses, such as fighting, healing, everyday tasks, fun, and learning new things. Some abilities, like enhanced reflexes and glimpses of the future, could happen without conscious effort. Others, like telekinesis or mind tricks, required practice but could become second nature over time. Sometimes, trying too hard could actually hinder one’s ability to use the Force. Certain abilities were exclusive to light side users, while others were only accessible to those who followed the dark side of the Force.

Some abilities, like Force barriers, could be used by anyone trained in the Force. In theory, any power could be harnessed by any trained Force user. Besides specific abilities typically associated with the dark side, like Force lightning, or light side abilities, like becoming a Force spirit, there were also neutral Force abilities. These neutral abilities could align with either the light or dark side depending on how they were used, such as mind tricks.

What Are the Most Common Force Abilities and Their Uses?

The Force grants its wielders access to a diverse array of abilities, each with its own unique applications and challenges. Among the most commonly observed and utilized powers is telekinesis – the ability to manipulate objects without physical contact. This versatile skill allows Force users to move items with their minds, often employing it in combat to repel enemies or hurl objects as projectiles.

A related ability, known as Force Stasis, enables practitioners to slow or completely immobilize objects, people, or even energy in mid-motion. This power was dramatically demonstrated by Kylo Ren during the Attack on Tuanul in 34 ABY, where he froze a blaster bolt in mid-air, showcasing the raw potential of this ability.

Another well-known Force power is the mind trick, a subtle yet potent ability that allows users to influence the thoughts and actions of others. This power, however, is most effective against individuals with weaker minds, limiting its universal applicability.

Force visions represent one of the more mysterious and unpredictable abilities. These glimpses into possible futures or hidden truths can occur spontaneously during sleep or even while awake. However, the cryptic nature of these visions often makes their interpretation challenging.

Force-sensitive individuals can also augment their physical capabilities, pushing the boundaries of natural athleticism. This enhancement grants them superhuman speed, coordination, and acrobatic prowess, allowing feats such as running along vertical surfaces.

Darth Maul probes Hera’s mind

The mind probe is a more invasive Force power, enabling users to delve into the thoughts of others. While a powerful tool for information gathering, it can be resisted by those with strong wills or Force sensitivity.

In some cases, skilled Force users have even managed to turn the probe back on its user, gaining insight into their attacker’s mind.

Some Force wielders have demonstrated the ability to induce sleep or unconsciousness in others, a useful skill for both peaceful and combative situations. This power has been used by various Force users, from Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn to the conflicted Kylo Ren.

At its core, Force sense remains the most fundamental ability available to Force-sensitive individuals. This power allows users to perceive the emotions of others, glimpse potential futures, and detect disturbances in the Force caused by significant events. It also enhances a user’s ability to sense danger and locate hidden individuals, even through physical barriers.

By focusing the Force inward, users can increase their resilience to harm, both physical and Force-based. This internal fortification makes it challenging for Force users to directly affect one another with their powers, often necessitating physical combat to break through an opponent’s defenses.

The Force also manifests in more subtle ways, such as through disturbances felt by sensitive individuals. These ripples in the Force can be caused by major events, like mass casualties or the presence of powerful Force users. The intensity of these disturbances can vary, with some being so potent that they cause physical discomfort to those who perceive them.

Certain locations and objects within the galaxy are attuned to the Force, requiring its use to access or activate them. The Jedi Temple on Lothal, for example, could only be entered through the application of Force powers, as could the mystical World Between Worlds. Similarly, both Jedi holocrons and Sith holocrons – repositories of knowledge and power – were designed to be opened only by those capable of manipulating the Force.

At the highest levels of mastery, some Force users have displayed truly extraordinary abilities. The enigmatic beings known as the Ones possessed powers that defied conventional understanding of the Force, including the ability to shapeshift and possess others. Similarly, the neutral Force entity known as the Bendu could manifest as massive storms and appear or disappear at will.

Some particularly powerful Force wielders have even demonstrated the ability to teleport, a skill shared by diverse groups such as the Force wielders, the Nightsisters, and individuals like Dorwin Corvax. These examples highlight the vast potential of the Force and the myriad ways in which it can be harnessed by those attuned to its power.

What Unique Abilities Do Light Side Force Users Have?

The light side of the Force offers its own unique set of abilities, often focused on protection, healing, and communion with the living Force. Perhaps the most profound of these powers is the ability to retain consciousness after death, becoming one with the Force while maintaining individual identity. This rare skill, known only to certain orders like the Force Priestesses and a select few Jedi, requires specialized training but allows the practitioner to continue influencing the physical world even after their corporeal form has passed on.

Some light side users have demonstrated the ability to absorb or deflect Force lightning, a power typically associated with the dark side.

Jedi Master Yoda, in particular, showed great skill in this area during his confrontations with Count Dooku and Darth Sidious, using his hands to catch and redirect the deadly energy.

Certain Jedi possess an innate ability known as psychometry, which allows them to sense the history and emotions associated with objects or locations they touch. This power can provide vivid impressions, including visual and auditory experiences, making it a valuable tool for gathering information and solving mysteries.

The Force can also be used to forge connections with animals, allowing Jedi to calm and even tame wild creatures. This ability speaks to the harmonious nature of the light side and its focus on working in concert with the living Force.

Some Jedi have displayed the power to influence large groups of people simultaneously, clouding their minds or altering their perceptions. While similar in some ways to the more targeted mind trick, this ability affects a much broader audience.

The Force often manifests in subtle ways through light side users. For example, Leia Organa’s incredible strength of will was believed by her brother, Luke Skywalker, to be a manifestation of her Force sensitivity.

One of the most awe-inspiring light side abilities is Force projection, which allows a user to create a lifelike image of themselves across vast distances. Luke Skywalker famously used this power to project himself from Ahch-To to Crait, light-years away, during a crucial moment in the war against the First Order. While incredibly powerful, this ability comes at a great cost, as the strain of maintaining such a projection can be fatal.

Force healing represents another powerful light side ability, allowing users to mend injuries and neutralize poisons by transferring their own life force to the afflicted. This power has been demonstrated by various Force users, including the ancient Jedi Master Yoda, the child known as Grogu, and the dyad pair of Rey and Ben Solo. In its most potent form, as seen in the case of a Force dyad, this ability can even restore life to the recently deceased, though at the cost of the healer’s own life force.

What Distinguishes Dark Side Abilities from Other Force Powers?

The dark side of the Force offers its adherents access to powers often deemed unnatural or forbidden by practitioners of the light. These abilities typically draw upon intense emotions, particularly negative feelings such as fear, hatred, and anger, as well as the desire for greater power.

One of the most infamous dark side powers is the ability to manipulate life itself. The Sith Lord Darth Plagueis was said to have achieved such mastery over the Force that he could create life by manipulating midi-chlorians and even prevent death. Other dark side techniques for preserving or restoring life include stealing vitality from others and the use of arcane dark potions.

sheev palpatine, known as Darth Sidious using Force lightning

Force lightning stands as one of the most recognizable and feared dark side abilities. This power allows a user to channel pure Force energy in the form of devastating electrical discharges from their fingertips.

The effects of Force lightning can range from intense pain to permanent injury and death, depending on the power of the user and the duration of exposure. Notably, even the wielder of this power is not immune to its effects, as demonstrated by the ultimate fate of Emperor Palpatine.

Some Sith have displayed variations on Force lightning, such as Dark Aura – a miasma of Force energy that damages and slows enemies. Another combat-oriented dark side ability is focused rage, which enhances the user’s aggression and resilience at the cost of mental clarity.

The dark side is also the source of both Sith and Nightsister magick, two distinct but related forms of Force manipulation. Sith magic, also known as Sith alchemy, often manifests as blue flames and can be used for various purposes, including creating illusions and reinforcing objects. Nightsister magick, typically appearing as green mist, has a wide range of applications, from reanimating the dead to granting invisibility.

Darth Vader using Force choke

Some dark side users have demonstrated the ability to move at incredibly high speeds for short periods, as seen with the Inquisitor known as the Second Sister. While not exclusive to dark side practitioners, this power is often enhanced by the intense emotions associated with the dark side.

The ability to create and manipulate Force bonds represents another powerful dark side technique. Supreme Leader Snoke demonstrated this by strengthening and exploiting the connection between Rey and Ben Solo, allowing them to communicate across vast distances. In its most potent form, as seen in a Force dyad, this connection can even allow for the transfer of physical objects between bonded individuals.

Perhaps the ultimate expression of dark side power is the ability to transfer one’s consciousness into a new body upon death. Emperor Palpatine used this technique to cheat death after his betrayal by Darth Vader, transferring his essence into a waiting clone body. This power, while immensely difficult to achieve, offers the tantalizing promise of immortality that has long driven many to explore the depths of the dark side.

A Complete Guide to All 103 Force Abilities

52. Alchemy

Alchemy was a Force technique employed by practitioners known as alchemists, focusing the Force into tangible, physical forms. Unlike the Jedi, the Nightsisters combined alchemy with their magick to harness and consolidate power. They utilized an ancient creature called the Sleeper to produce the Water of Life, a form of alchemy used for healing. Among the Sith, Sith alchemists used Sith alchemy to achieve remarkable feats in both metallurgy and biological manipulation.

53. Hypothermia

Hypothermia was a Force ability that could be acquired after several months of attunement to a spinel tasar crystal. This power enabled individuals to detect subtle temperature variations in objects. This skill enabled individuals to channel the Force into their bodies, enhancing agility, acrobatics, and athletic abilities to levels surpassing those achievable by even the most elite athletes relying solely on physical strength.

55. Ayna-Seff

Ayna-seff was a Force technique from the hassat-durr tradition, taught by the Baran Do sages on Dorin. Like other abilities in this family, ayna-seff imbued the user’s body with low-level electromagnetic radiation. The term “ayna-seff” translates to “dead brain” in Basic, as it rendered brain activity undetectable. Mastery of this technique involved using a two-piece training device: a durasteel sphere and a charged plate. The goal was to levitate the sphere and hold it steady, aligning with the specific energy frequencies and intensities of the technique.

In 43 ABY, Luke Skywalker learned this technique from Tila Mong, the Mistress of the Baran Do Order. While navigating the Kathol Rift with his son Ben in search of the Aing-Tii, Luke used ayna-seff to shield the Jade Shadow by countering the intense electromagnetic radiation within the nebulae. The technique had previously been passed down to Jacen Solo by Koro Ziil, a former Master of the Order.

Plo Koon was also well-versed in ayna-seff, noting its ability to deceive an electroencephaloscan. Valin Horn later employed this skill to mask his brain activity during a period of mysterious psychosis.

56. Battle Sense

Battle sense was a Force ability that could be acquired after months of attunement to an opal tasar crystal. This power granted its wielder an advantage at the onset of combat, enabling them to seize the initiative during a fight.

57. Beam of Light

The Neti species possessed the extraordinary ability to unleash a powerful beam of light at the moment of their death by channeling the combined Force energy of the planet they were rooted in or another massive energy source. This immense force was capable of causing catastrophic destruction to a planet’s surface and obliterating starships and other vessels. In 10 ABY, the ancient Jedi Master Ood Bnar used this devastating power to destroy Executor Sedriss, sacrificing himself to save Jedi Knights Luke Skywalker and Kam Solusar.

Over a century later, during Emperor Krayt’s victorious assault, a female Neti Jedi Master named T’ra Saa, alongside Nat Skywalker, harnessed this ability. Together, they unleashed a beam of light using the raw energy of the Temple’s exploding reactor, clearing a path for their allies to escape.

After both Bnar and Saa’s deaths, small saplings sprouted from the ground where they perished. These saplings seemed to carry the planet’s Force energy, coursing through the deeply embedded roots left behind by the fallen Neti.

58. Force Call

Force call was an advanced and potent Force ability, accessible only to the most powerful Force-sensitive individuals because of the immense energy it demanded.

Through the Force, a Jedi could summon others to their location, creating a resonating call that reverberated throughout the Force itself. Those who perceived this summons found it almost irresistible. Raynar Thul employed this technique to gather the surviving members of the Myrkr strike team at the onset of the Dark Nest Crisis, while Luke Skywalker used it on Ossus to convene a meeting of the New Jedi Order shortly before the war’s conclusion.

59. Cleanse

In 41.5 ABY, Jaden Korr demonstrated a unique application of the Force. After defeating the Kam Solusar clone, Alpha, Jaden took the unstable red lightsaber the clone had wielded and decided to make it his own. Unwilling to use a red crystal and dissatisfied with the blade’s instability, he removed the crystal and purified it, eliminating its impurities. This process stabilized the blade and altered its color from red to yellow.

Jaden was particularly pleased with the change, as yellow blades were traditionally associated with Jedi Sentinels, a role that perfectly aligned with his balance of Force abilities and lightsaber combat. When he revealed the restored lightsaber to Marr Idi-Shael and Khedryn Faal, they were astonished. Faal, impressed by the transformation, even jokingly questioned why Jaden couldn’t similarly purge the imperfections of the Community clones.

60. Cleanse Mind

Cleanse Mind was an essential Force ability utilized by Jedi Consulars of the Jedi Order. This power enabled a Consular to dispel an active mind-affecting Force ability, either from themselves or from an ally within their line of sight.

61. The Cry of the Broken King

The Cry of the Broken King was a Force power. In 382 BBY, while investigating the murder of the Sarravi V’Kara, the Sephi thief Tey Sirrek was discovered standing near the Sarravi’s corpse by Kiffar Jedi Master Vildar Mac. Mac had been pursuing Sirrek after witnessing him steal from a Bpfasshi Truthsayer. Believing Sirrek to be V’Kara’s killer, Mac confronted him and attempted to strike him down with his lightsaber. However, Sirrek successfully evaded all of Mac’s attacks, prompting the frustrated Jedi to question how he was doing so.

In response, Sirrek claimed mastery over several Force abilities, including the Cry of the Broken King, Vitali, and Morichro. Mac dismissed the claims, asserting that Morichro was nothing more than a myth. Sirrek then employed biological pheromones—an evolutionary trait developed by his ancestors to deter predators—to temporarily incapacitate Mac. While doing so, he insisted that he was using Morichro to subdue the Jedi.

62. Dampen Force

Dampen Force was a technique designed to suppress the Force abilities of others. When activated, it was often described as feeling like a cold, wet blanket. Under its effects, victims were unable to manipulate objects larger than molecules. While it did not entirely block access to the Force and was temporary, it significantly weakened the victim physically and could not be resisted or broken. Once applied, the effect could last for days before wearing off.

Hethrir, a known practitioner of Dampen Force, used it to subjugate children he abducted for his Empire Reborn movement. He frequently suppressed the abilities of non-human “students” at critical moments, reinforcing the movement’s humanocentric ideology. Those deemed “failures” were removed, sold into slavery, and used as a source of income for the movement.

63. Dreambubble

The term dreambubble was used by Jedi Knights to describe the deep dreaming state that often occurred during Force-induced hibernation. While Jedi in hibernation were not truly asleep, they could still dream, with the experience likened to being within a self-contained bubble.

64. Endure

Endure was a Jedi Force ability used to withstand and manage physical pain. During the Battle of Nar Shaddaa, Jedi Master Crucitorn employed this technique to reduce the agony of being immolated. Between 102 BBY and 68 BBY, Jedi Master Lene Kostana taught this skill to Dooku, who later shared it with his Padawans: Rael Averross and Qui-Gon Jinn.

65. Force Familiar

A Force familiar was an animal capable of forming a strong bond with its owner through the Force. On the Force-rich Outer Rim planet of Vjun, this connection was regarded as an art. One such example was Miss Vix, a Vjun fox who served as the Force familiar to Viscountess Whirry Malreaux in 19 BBY. Miss Vix stayed loyally by her mistress’s side, often accompanying her around Château Malreaux. Both the fox and the Viscountess perished during Count Dooku’s occupation of the château amid the Clone Wars.

66. Farsight

Farsight, also known as clairvoyance, far sight, or farseeing, was a Force ability that enabled users to perceive their surroundings or distant events without relying on physical sight. This power enhanced the user’s visual and spatial awareness, allowing them to “see” through darkness, walls, or other obstructions. It also provided insight into objects, people, locations, or events beyond the normal range of perception.

67. Floating Meditation

Floating Meditation, also referred to as Rising Meditation, was a Jedi technique where an individual used the Force to levitate a few inches above the ground while meditating. Often, objects in the vicinity would orbit around the Force-sensitive practitioner. At times, this technique was combined with Battle Meditation for enhanced effects.

Revan employed Floating Meditation during his retraining at the Jedi Enclave on Dantooine, where he levitated himself along with objects like chairs and a datapad. Bastila Shan frequently used this ability alongside her Battle Meditation. Barriss Offee was also known to practice it regularly. Galen Marek utilized this meditation to focus on locating Darth Vader. Luke Skywalker accidentally discovered the technique when awakened by Han Solo to find himself a meter off the ground. He later used it while imprisoned by the Joiners on Woteba. Similarly, Jacen Solo preferred meditating this way, believing that physical contact with the ground could disrupt his focus.

68. Force Blast

Force Blast was a potent Force ability utilized by both dark side practitioners and neutral Force-sensitives. When activated, it unleashed concentrated blasts of dark side energy, often resulting in devastating effects on objects or opponents. This ability could be further developed into an advanced technique known as the Sickening Blast.

By channeling energy through their hands, users could project focused bursts of dark side power capable of obliterating objects or annihilating living beings. Initially, controlling such immense energy posed significant challenges, but with practice, practitioners could master it, harnessing destructive power capable of obliterating anything in its path. Users sometimes suffered burns to their flesh while wielding this power, though they felt no pain. The ability’s potency could be amplified when combined with a Sith amulet, although the amulet was not essential.

A more universal variation of this technique utilized compressed air to strike enemies and was commonly employed between 40 and 44 ABY.

69. Force Focus

Force Focus, also referred to as Force Determination, was a technique that allowed a user to concentrate intensely on a task using the Force. Luke Skywalker employed this ability to precisely fire proton torpedoes into the Death Star’s thermal exhaust port.

70. Force Generation

Force Generation was a Force ability that enabled a user to draw upon the Living Force from their surroundings, harnessing its energy to enhance their efforts by delving deeper into the power of the Force.

71. Force in Balance

Force in Balance was a technique that allowed a user to heal their own wounds by transferring injury to their enemies. An advanced variation combined this ability with Force suppression, reducing a target’s resistance to the Force and amplifying the technique’s effectiveness.

During the Cold War, this power was taught to Jedi Sages and Jedi Shadows.

72. Force Scattering

Force Scattering was an ability that enabled a Jedi to diffuse their presence in the Force over a specific area, making it challenging for others to pinpoint their exact location. Kueller utilized this technique to obscure his presence across an entire town before facing Luke Skywalker on Pydyr.

73. Force Scribe

Force Scribe was an advanced Fallanassi technique that used the White Current to inscribe words onto objects. These inscriptions were permanent, visible only to those trained in the White Current, and could be read, altered, or erased exclusively by such individuals. Additionally, this ability allowed a practitioner to detect the presence and location of scribing on any object.

74. Force Form

Force forms were meditative battle stances that served as alternatives to traditional lightsaber combat forms. While all Jedi connected with the Force, these forms specifically enhanced a Jedi’s ability to sense and control the Force, often at the expense of physical prowess. They were particularly favored by Jedi Consulars and others who prioritized the Force over lightsaber combat, even during battle.

During the era of the First Jedi Purge, four major Force forms were recognized:

  • Force Channel
  • Force Potency
  • Force Affinity
  • Force Mastery

75. Hassat-Durr

Hassat-durr was a family of Force techniques developed by the Baran Do sages of the Kel Dor. Translated as “lightning rod,” these techniques infused the user with electromagnetic energy. However, improper use, particularly during storms, could result in repeated lightning strikes.

One specific technique, ayna-seff (“dead brain”), required significant skill to master. Jedi Knight Jacen Solo learned it in three days, while Grand Master Luke Skywalker achieved mastery in two. Solo was taught by Koro Ziil in 34 ABY, prior to his fall to the dark side as Darth Caedus. Later, after Ziil became the leader of the Hidden Ones, Tila Mong succeeded him as Mistress of the Order and taught the skill to Skywalker. When Jedi Knight Kyle Katarn killed Gorc, the bond with Pic caused him to fall into a violent frenzy.

84. Mind Walking

Mind Walking was the practice in which Mind Walkers entered and remained in a realm they referred to as “beyond shadows.” Through a specific form of meditation, their consciousness would leave their physical bodies and enter this realm. Jacen Solo learned this technique during his five-year journey following the Yuuzhan Vong War. Several years later, Luke and Ben Skywalker also learned it while retracing Jacen’s steps to understand the cause of his fall to the dark side. In 44 ABY, the Skywalkers teamed up with the Lost Tribe of Sith for a mission to eliminate Abeloth. After traveling to Abeloth’s homeworld in the Maw, Luke, Ben, Sith High Lord Sarasu Taalon, Sith Saber Gavar Khai, and Captain Leeha Faal used Mind Walking to enter beyond shadows in an effort to locate her. Luke would later use the technique one more time in an attempt to stop Abeloth, this time joined by Darth Krayt, who allied with Luke to combine their strength in defeating her.

85. Mindscape

A mindscape was a Force ability that created an environment within one’s mind, often used by powerful Force-sensitive individuals to torment and corrupt others, such as when the soul of Tenebrae invaded the Outlander’s mind after his death.
