Kyber crystal

1. What is a Kyber Crystal?

Kyber crystal

A kyber crystal was a rare crystal naturally found on various planets throughout the galaxy, it was used by both Jedi and Sith in the construction of their lightsabers.

In ancient times, it was called a kaiburr crystal. As part of their training, Jedi younglings were sent to the Crystal Cave on the ice planet Ilum to find their own lightsaber crystals. The crystal’s distinctive luster was poetically described by the Jedi as “the water of the kyber.” Larger and rarer kyber crystals, steeped in legend, were said to have powered ancient Sith superweapons.

Through a specialized process involving heating in a furnace and hammering, kyber crystals could be tempered to resonate with the nature of multiple individuals, rather than bonding with a single one for life. When these tempered crystals were placed in a weapon like a lightsaber, their color would change within moments of being wielded by a new user.

2. Characteristics

2.1 Description

Kyber crystals were rare, Force-attuned crystals that naturally grew across the galaxy, with some regions having a higher concentration than others.

These crystals uniquely concentrated energy through the Force, resonating with it and exhibiting a form of “collective consciousness” that bordered on sentience. They were capable of non-verbal communication with each other and with living beings. Some theorized that the variations in the kyber crystal lattice were akin to the emotional shifts in a sentient being.

2.2 Composition

Kyber crystals were made up of both organic and inorganic elements. They were incredibly resilient, able to withstand the intense temperatures and pressures present in the cores of massive stars, making them impervious to fire and resistant to hammering.

Kyber crystals were known for their intricate internal patterns and were sturdy enough to survive the violent explosion of a lightsaber’s power grid, such as those caused by incorrectly assembling the emitter matrix.

2.3 Kyber Crystals and Their Connection to the Force

Kyber crystals would not transfer warmth to inanimate objects like a sheath or a towel, responding only to life, including plant life. When held by an individual, the crystal would warm, but its temperature would not change.

Many scientists believed that kyber crystals could alter their shape depending on ambient energies. These crystals grew in an organized manner, adding to their prismatic structure piece by piece, and had no discernible lifespan. They could range in size from as small as a fingernail to enormous proportions, with all kyber crystals being attuned to the Force regardless of size. However, improperly directing laser energy into the crystals could weaken their lattice structure, similar to how radiation affects living cells.

2.4 Formation and Mining

True kybers were found only in veins of pure kyberite. Crystals with impurities were considered false kybers. Ranite, a closely related mineral, was denser and tougher but did not contain kyber crystals.

Kyber crystals were typically brought to the surface by tectonic movements along fault lines, having formed under high temperatures and pressures. They could be mined from secondary deposits in streams, where they had been transported over long distances, or found in their primary locations, growing freely in lava tubes, caves, fault zones, and within veins of kyberite.

3. The Role of Kyber Crystals in Lightsaber Construction

Kyber crystals were most famously found in the Crystal Cave of Ilum, where they played a crucial role in lightsaber construction by focusing energy into the weapon’s distinctive plasma blade. These crystals shared a profound connection with the Jedi for tens of thousands of years, inviting them to listen to their song and learn their lessons.

Jedi younglings journeyed to these ice caves to harvest their own crystals, which were then used to build their lightsabers. The Force guided the selection process, leading each Jedi to a crystal that resonated with them. For those not destined to receive it, the crystal remained cold to the touch. However, to those chosen by the crystal, it emitted “music” and “harmony,” drawing them in.

Before being chosen, kyber crystals were colorless, but once bonded with a Jedi, they typically turned blue or green, though other hues were also possible. Notable exceptions included Mace Windu’s purple lightsaber, the yellow blades of the Jedi Temple Guards, the black Darksaber, and Ahsoka Tano’s white lightsabers. The crystal’s final color was determined by the nature of its bonded owner.

Additionally, it was possible to alter the angle or frequency of kyber crystals or lightsaber blades to change their color, as Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker did with his former Padawan’s lightsabers.

Kyber crystals were inherently imbued with “light side energy” and resisted attempts by dark-side practitioners to use them in lightsabers. For example, a crystal belonging to Jedi Master Kirak Infil’a subjected Darth Vader to intense visions when he attempted to use it.

To wield a kyber crystal, a Sith had to use the Force to dominate and corrupt it, a process that caused the crystal to “bleed” as if it were a living being, resulting in the distinctive red or crimson-bladed lightsabers associated with the Sith. However, it was possible to “heal” a corrupted kyber crystal, a technique found in the Chronicles of Brus-Bu. Ahsoka Tano notably purified two crystals she retrieved from the Sixth Brother’s lightsaber after his defeat, turning them white in the process.

Kyber crystals were renowned for their unparalleled ability to channel energy and produce immense power. Many sought to create synthetic kyber crystals, but their artificial nature rendered them highly unstable and prone to explosive reactions. When attempts were made to forcefully study or harness a crystal’s power, it would “resist,” making it difficult for anyone to use it against its will. Those working closely with these crystals often experienced headaches, sleeplessness, and developed an obsessive fixation on them.

For centuries, the Jedi meticulously cut and faceted kyber crystals to remove imperfections and enhance their energy output. Galen Erso theorized that larger crystals required faceting not only to eliminate these flaws but also to reduce energy diffraction caused by the introduction of lasing mediums. With precise faceting, the energy pulse released by the crystal could be significantly amplified and, with the aid of containment devices, directed into a collimated beam of immense power, as seen in the DS-1 battle station.

Erso also suggested that further energy enhancement could be achieved by realigning the crystals’ lattices along the dark or “nighttime” axis of the Force. By doing so, the crystals’ diffraction tendencies could be controlled, allowing technology to force them into obedience. The resulting energy yield could then be contained and harnessed, or, if left unchecked, could cause catastrophic destruction, capable of annihilating entire population centers.

Kyber crystals can be used to create powerful weapons like kyber bombs and blasters.

For instance, when Saw Gerrera destabilized a massive kyber crystal, it absorbed so much energy that upon reaching critical mass, it exploded, destroying both the freighter transporting it and a nearby Star Destroyer.

Kyber crystals were not only used to power lightsabers but also other weapons. There were attempts to create kyber bombs and kyber blasters, with a few examples of such weapons stored in the Jedi Archives.

4. Types of Kyber Crystals

Various types of kyber crystals could be utilized in the construction of lightsabers or other objects, with some producing unique effects in the lightsabers they powered.

4.1 Adegan Crystals

Adegan crystals, a type of lightsaber crystal frequently used by Jedi, were rare, Force-reactive stones primarily found in the Adega system, though they were also present on the planet Halm. Other known locations included Mygeeto and parts of the Cularin asteroid belt.

Adegan crystals shared a unique connection with the Force, allowing Jedi to forge a bond between themselves, the Force, and their weapon. This connection caused lightsabers equipped with Adegan crystals to emit a faint Force signature detectable by other Jedi.

The mephite and pontite variants of Adegan crystals, known for producing the finest lightsaber blades, were structurally similar to Ilum crystals. Despite this similarity, Ilum crystals were much more abundant, with entire caves of high-quality crystals, making them the most common lightsaber crystals among the Jedi until the Great Jedi Purge. Most Padawans underwent the ritual of constructing their first lightsaber on Ilum.

Ilum crystals were predominantly green or blue, with occasional instances of purple. While they were not as strongly connected to the Force as Adegan crystals, they possessed the properties necessary for a Jedi’s weapon. When induced by resonant frequencies, these crystals emitted powerful bursts of light, which were then harnessed into a rod-like beam by other lightsaber components. Obi-Wan Kenobi used an Adegan crystal in his first lightsaber.

During the Cold War, the Sith Empire discovered how to use Adegan crystals mined from Ilum to create a stealth armada.

Following the execution of Order 66, the Galactic Empire banned the possession of all crystals capable of being used in a lightsaber.

Types of Adegan Crystals:

  • Kathracite was the most common variety of Adegan crystal, followed by relacite and danite. These crystals were less effective at focusing energy compared to their rarer counterparts and were typically used in training sabers.
  • Mephite was a standard Adegan crystal commonly used by Jedi.
  • Pontite was the rarest and most potent type of Adegan crystal. Extremely difficult to find, it emitted a powerful aura that cooled both the skin and temperament of its wielder.

4.2 Barab Ingots

Barab Ingots, also known as Barab ore ingots, were rare lightsaber crystals found on the radiation-scorched surface of the planet Barab I. Despite the challenging conditions, a few managed to discover ingots suitable for use as focusing crystals. When integrated into a lightsaber, these ingots produced a clear, intense blade that burned almost to the point of losing cohesion.

The constant exposure to Barab I’s radiation gave the blade a fiery quality, often causing whatever it struck to ignite. The color of a Barab ingot blade could vary, with examples found in nearly every common lightsaber hue.

4.3 Christophsis Crystals

Christophsis crystals were a type of kyber crystal found on the Outer Rim planet Christophsis, a key battleground early in the Clone Wars. While the planet’s significance to both factions arose from various factors, its value to the Jedi Order was rooted in the pure kyber crystals formed within its crystalline forests.

Lightsaber blades crafted with Christophsis crystals uniquely amplified kinetic energy, resulting in exceptionally powerful impacts.

4.4 Dantari Crystals

Dantari crystals were a type of lightsaber crystal found on Dantooine, specifically within the eggs of the native kinrath creatures. These crystals were believed to reflect the alignment of their wielder, as seen with the Meetra Surik Crystal. Before the discovery of superior crystals on Ilum, Dantari crystals were highly favored by the Jedi.

4.5 Dragite Gems

Dragite gems were small, dull, and fragile kyber crystals found in the D’olop mountain range on the agriworld M’haeli, located in the Expansion Region. Among the most brittle kyber crystals in existence, they were difficult to incorporate into a lightsaber. However, once successfully integrated, they emitted a loud hum and generated a shockwave upon striking a solid target. These shockwaves could disorient or injure the target. Dragite gems were valued at 14,000 credits.

4.6 Ghostfire Crystals

Ghostfire crystals were rare lightsaber crystals discovered on select Outer Rim planets. These crystals were sourced exclusively from a unique rock formation located on a limited number of planets. The ghostfire formations consisted of fragile spires of transparent stones, often found atop mountain peaks. When integrated into a lightsaber hilt, these crystals generated a nearly translucent blade that glowed faintly and left behind an illusory afterimage of both the saber and its wielder.

In addition to their colorless appearance, these blades were distinct for their almost complete silence, lacking the iconic hum associated with most lightsabers.

4.7 Ilum Crystals

Ilum crystals were a type of kyber crystal found deep within the caves of the snow-covered planet Ilum. Highly regarded as some of the finest crystals for constructing lightsabers, they held great significance for the Jedi. Padawans often journeyed to Ilum as part of a ritual known as “The Gathering,” where they entered the Crystal Cave and used the Force to locate their crystals, which they would then bring back to the entrance.

Pirate captain Hondo Ohnaka once claimed that an Ilum crystal was so valuable that it could make a person wealthy.

4.8 Jedha Crystals

Jedha crystals were a type of kyber crystal found on the moon Jedha, located in the Mid Rim Territories. These crystals were highly valued by Jedi and members of the Church of the Force as sacred artifacts from Jedha. Lightsabers equipped with Jedha crystals generated focused and powerful blades.

After the destruction of Jedha City by the first Death Star’s superlaser, some Jedha crystals were salvaged from the ruins. Many of these recovered crystals were cracked and damaged, earning the name “cracked Jedha crystals.” Unlike their intact counterparts, lightsabers powered by cracked Jedha crystals produced unstable and jagged blades. These damaged crystals were priced at 8,000 credits.

4.9 Kimber Stones

Kimber stones were a type of kyber crystal discovered on the moon of Y’ness. When used in a lightsaber, these stones generated a nonlethal blade, which initially led to their exclusion from standard lightsaber construction.

However, a few Jedi eventually chose to incorporate them into their weapons. Following the fall of the Jedi Order, Kimber stones became available on the black market, where they were sold for 6,500 credits.

4.10 Krayt Dragon Pearls

Krayt dragon pearls were lustrous, colorful stones found in the final chamber of a krayt dragon’s gizzard. These stones aided in crushing the creature’s food and, over time, became rounded from constant movement. Pearls could be found in various colors, including blue, green, red, white, and black.

Due to their unique refractive properties, they could be used in a lightsaber if carefully cleaned, prepared, and installed—a challenging process. These pearls were highly prized, often valued at over a hundred thousand credits each, and were seen as proof of having slain a krayt dragon, a symbol of bravery among Tusken Raiders.

Both Common and Greater Krayt Dragons produced pearls, but the pearls from the Greater Krayt were significantly larger and, as a result, much more valuable.

4.11 Lorrdian Gemstones

Lorrdian gemstones were crystals used to enhance lightsabers. They originated during the Kanz Disorders when the enslaved Lorrdians developed kinetic communication to interact with one another, allowing them to predict the actions of others, including their Argazdan overlords, through keen observation of subtle body language cues.

Some Force-sensitive Lorrdians infused certain gemstones with these predictive abilities. When these gems were installed in a lightsaber, they enabled the user to better read their opponents’ movements, improving their overall defense and enhancing their ability to deflect blaster bolts.

4.12 Nishalorite Stones

Nishalorite stones, a type of kyber crystal, were discovered on planets with powerful magnetic fields. These crystals typically exhibited a dark-gray or blue-black hue and were valued at 12,500 credits. Lightsabers equipped with nishalorite crystals produced dense blades that grew more intense when aligned with magnetic north.

4.13 Seeker Crystals

Seeker crystals were a type of kyber crystal known for producing a pink blade when used in a lightsaber. These crystals enabled the user to sense nearby beings through the Force, attuning the blade to its wielder and allowing them to detect hidden dangers, though not to pinpoint their exact source.

The origins of Seeker crystals remained shrouded in mystery, giving rise to dark rumors. Some speculated they came from beyond the known galaxy, others believed they were traded in exclusive black markets, and some even suggested that their original purpose was unrelated to powering lightsabers.

4.14 Solari Crystal

The Solari crystal was among the oldest and most potent lightsaber crystals within the Jedi Order. This light orange gem could only be wielded by a Jedi with a pure spirit and unwavering devotion to the light side of the Force. It was impervious to corruption by the dark side, and its bearer had to maintain a pure heart for it to remain effective.

4.15 Sorian Crystals

Sorian crystals were a type of kyber crystal known for their unique ability to reflect light in a way that resembled fire. When used in a lightsaber, these crystals generated a blade that unleashed a surge of power with every impact.

4.16 Synthetic Kyber Crystals

Synthetic kyber crystals were artificially created kyber crystals, known for their instability and explosive nature. These Force-attuned crystals, often used by Jedi and Sith in lightsaber construction, emitted a green glow. However, their synthetic origin made them highly volatile, leading the Galactic Empire to outlaw their possession.

In 4 ABY, a young smuggler was hired by the gangster “Happy” Dapp to deliver a shipment of these synthetic kyber crystals. During a contraband sweep at Longstar Marketplace on Burnin Konn, an Imperial Security Officer intercepted the smuggler. To avoid arrest, the smuggler stunned the officer and fled into a nearby mine shaft, where they detonated the crystals to block pursuing Imperial stormtroopers by collapsing the entrance.

Enraged by the loss of the crystals, Dapp sent his bodyguard, Tryken, to confront the smuggler. Despite the confrontation, the aging Zabrak was defeated, and the smuggler, along with their sibling Riley, was forced to work off the debt owed for the destroyed crystals.

4.17 Tainted Nightsister Crystal

A Tainted Nightsister Crystal was a kyber crystal crafted by the Nightsisters for use in weapons resembling lightsabers. This crystal was formed by soaking it in Dathomir’s magical ichor, which corrupted its connection to the Force. When used in a blade, the crystal produced a foul, choking green smoke.

4.18 Thontiin Crystals

Thontiin crystals were a rare type of kyber crystal seldom used as the core of a lightsaber during the era of the Jedi Order. However, they were highly valued for their unique healing properties, aiding Jedi healers in alleviating a patient’s pain and simplifying treatment.

During the Clone Wars, Thontiin crystals found new purpose on the front lines. After a Jedi Knight’s lightsaber sustained significant damage in battle, they sought to replace their damaged Ilum crystal with a Thontiin crystal. Upon doing so, the Jedi discovered that the crystal’s healing properties were amplified when channeled through a lightsaber, allowing the bearer to endure intense pain during combat.

Although the Jedi Order’s healers were initially reluctant to see Thontiin crystals used as weapons, the desperate circumstances of the Clone Wars led to a few of these crystals being repurposed for combat.

4.19 Varpeline Crystals

Varpeline crystals were a type of kyber crystal originating from the Outer Rim world of Mearalis II. Known for their exceptional hardness and density, these crystals were often used in industrial machinery for cutting.

When utilized in lightsabers, Varpeline crystals produced blades that emitted a sharp sound upon contact and could slice through some of the thickest and toughest materials more efficiently than other blades.

4.20 Zophis crystals

Zophis crystals were a type of kyber crystal found on the Outer Rim planet Zoph. Long before the Clone Wars between the Galactic Republic and the Separatist Alliance, Jedi Padawans journeyed to Zoph in search of these crystals to construct their personal lightsabers. Although the blades forged from Zophis crystals could easily slice through durasteel plating, Jedi discovered that the blades possessed devastating and unstable properties due to the crystals’ unique resonance.

However, as the importance of Ilum and its kyber crystals grew within the Jedi Order, the use of Zophis crystals gradually declined. By the time of the Clone Wars (22 BBY to 19 BBY), Zoph had fallen under Separatist control, making travel to the planet perilous for Jedi. Despite this, a few lightsabers still featured Zophis crystals, although they had become extremely rare and were valued at 11,000 credits.
