Yellow lightsabers are a relatively new addition to Star Wars lore and are not explored as often as other colors. However, from their appearances in Star Wars media, especially in “The Rise of Skywalker”, fans can interpret their significance in different ways, so what does a yellow lightsaber mean, and who often uses them in Star Wars? In this article, we will explore these topics in detail.
What Does a Yellow Lightsaber Mean?
The yellow lightsaber represents knowledge and wisdom, balance, vigilance, a focus on the protection of others, personal growth and self-discovery
- Knowledge and Wisdom: The yellow lightsaber is a symbol of wisdom and enlightenment. Jedi who wield yellow lightsabers are seen as guardians of knowledge, reflecting their commitment to the Jedi Order and its teachings.
- Balance: Yellow lightsabers symbolize a balance between the light side and dark sides of the Force. They are often wielded by characters who embody this duality, suggesting a nuanced understanding of morality. This is evident in characters like Rey, whose yellow lightsaber signifies her role in establishing a new Jedi Order focused on unity and balance.
- Vigilance: In “The Clone Wars”, the Jedi Temple Guards have yellow lightsabers, they are always on alert to protect the Jedi Temple, their job is to watch over the temple and keep it safe from any threats, their constant watchfulness shows their dedication to protection.

1. Jedi Sentinels
Who Are Jedi Sentinels?
A Jedi Sentinel was one of the three main types of Jedi, alongside Jedi Consulars and Jedi Guardians. Sentinels aimed to balance the fighting skills of Guardians and the Force knowledge of Consulars. They had good combat skills and knew a lot about the Force, but they also focused on practical skills like security, computers, stealth, demolitions, repairs and medicine.
Instead of just fighting or using the Force to solve problems, Sentinels would often use tools or clever methods. For example, instead of breaking down a locked door like a Jedi Guardian or using the Force to open it like a Consular, a Sentinel would pick the lock.
The role of Sentinels stayed pretty much the same throughout Jedi history and their branch was first described by the Sentinel Jedi recruiter Morrit Ch’gally in the book “The Jedi Path: A Manual for Students of the Force”.
Jedi Sentinel’s Yellow Lightsaber
Jedi Sentinels who were few in number typically used yellow lightsabers. Unlike the other branches, they didn’t have high-ranking titles like Sage or Warrior Masters. Instead, they focused on various skills needed to succeed as Sentinels, they often practiced specialized Force techniques such as Force Immunity which helped them resist mental influences and Force-based attacks.
During the Jedi Civil War, Bastila Shan was a notable Jedi Sentinel. Even as a Padawan, she mastered the challenging skill of Battle meditation playing a key role in the defeat, capture and redemption of the fallen Jedi Revan.
2. Jedi Temple Guards
Who are Jedi Temple Guards?
The Jedi Temple Guard was a group in charge of protecting the Jedi Temple on Coruscant, the capital of the Galactic Republic, this was an old and respected tradition in Jedi history.
Temple Guards were Jedi Knights chosen to become anonymous sentinels as part of their lifelong dedication to the Order. Dressed in formal robes and a mask, guardsmen were expected to be completely emotionally detached. They worked under the head of security Jedi Master Cin Drallig and carried lightsaber pikes which are double-bladed lightsabers with yellow blades.
Jedi Temple Guard’s Yellow Lightsaber: The lightsaber Pike
The lightsaber pike, also called the Jedi Temple Guard lightsaber, was a thick and powerful lightsaber variant similar to a double-bladed lightsaber, with a staff shape and two yellow blades at each end. Some lightsaber pikes had a handle that, when activated, extended a short blade making the weapon two to three meters long, and there were also hinged versions. Luke Skywalker had a single-blade version, but because it was damaged, it was modified to have a regular handle as we will see later.
3. Luke Skywalker
Who is Luke Skywalker?
Luke Skywalker was a Force-sensitive human male, born in 19 BBY with his twin sister Leia. He is the child of Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker and Senator Padmé Amidala. Luke became a Jedi Master and played a big role in the Galactic Civil War when the Galactic Empire was in power.
Luke and his friends Princess Leia Organa and General Han Solo fought for the Alliance to Restore the Republic, they aimed to defeat the Empire and restore democracy. After the war, Luke became a legend known as one of the greatest Jedi ever.
Luke Skywalker used at least three different lightsabers during the Galactic Civil War. The first one was his father’s former blue lightsaber, given to him by Obi-Wan Kenobi. Luke used it for three years before losing it, along with his hand, in a fight with Darth Vader on Bespin.
The second lightsaber he obtained was after visiting a Jedi outpost on Tempes. This one was a damaged yellow lightsaber pike that he repaired and used to fight enemies like Commander Ellian Zahra.
Finally, Luke built a new lightsaber with a green blade. He used this one to save his friends from Jabba the Hutt and in his last fight with Darth Vader.
Luke Skywalker’s Yellow Lightsaber
During the High Republic Era, the Jedi Order set up an outpost on Tempes. It was later abandoned, leaving behind several Jedi artifacts including Jedi Temple Guard armor and a damaged lightsaber pike on a pedestal. After the Battle of Hoth in 3 ABY, Luke Skywalker lost his father’s lightsaber in a duel with Darth Vader on Bespin. Following directions from the partially trained Padawan Verla, Skywalker went to the outpost on Tempes to find a new lightsaber.
When Luke Skywalker entered the abandoned outpost, he saw the lightsaber and took it. Suddenly, the spirit of The Grand Inquisitor attacked him, Skywalker defended himself by using the yellow lightsaber. Although the Inquisitor had the advantage at first, Skywalker managed to cut off his hand and strike him across the chest. Afterward, Skywalker returned to the Alliance Fleet’s Fourth Division and showed his new lightsaber to his comrades on an EF76 Nebulon-B escort frigate.
Luke’s yellow lightsaber got damaged during a fight with Killdroids, and his right arm was hurt too when a sentry droid crushed them both. Skywalker fixed his arm and went to find a new kyber crystal. While reading an old Jedi book about kyber crystals, he told R2-D2 that the crystal cracked during the fight, this made the lightsaber work poorly, cut out at bad times and feel unstable for a long time. In 4 ABY, Skywalker built a new green lightsaber and started using it.
Luke Skywalker’s yellow lightsaber appeared in the 2020 Marvel Star Wars comic series written by Charles Soule and illustrated by Jesús Saiz. It was published by Marvel Comics on September 16, 2020.
4. Rey Skywalker
Who is Rey Skywalker?
Rey Skywalker, known as Rey during the First Order-Resistance War, was a human female Jedi Master who fought for the Resistance. She started as a scavenger on the planet Jakku but her life changed dramatically during the last days of the New Republic Era.
Rey’s choice to help the droid BB-8 led her to discover the Force within her, prompting her to seek training from Jedi Master Luke Skywalker. She trains as a Jedi, learns the truth about her mysterious origins, and becomes pivotal in the Resistance’s struggle against the First Order. Despite her dedication to the Jedi and the light side of the Force, Rey struggled with anger and felt drawn to the dark side, partly due to her conflict with Ben Solo, also known as Kylo Ren.
Rey adopts the surname Skywalker choosing to honor the legacy of Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa, who mentored her in the ways of the Force. Despite discovering she is the granddaughter of Emperor Palpatine, she rejects her dark heritage and forges her own identity as a Jedi. Rey made her own lightsaber during the fight against the First Order.
Rey Skywalker’s Yellow Lightsaber
Rey made her lightsaber from parts of her old staff and wrapped it with cloth for the grip. The handle was bulky and tough like the staff because of its strong armor. Inside, it had a kyber crystal that made the blade glow yellow. To turn it on, she twisted a gear-like part that opened up the emitter letting the blade come out.
During the war between the First Order and the Resistance, Rey started building her own lightsaber in her room at the base on Ajan Kloss. She thought about making a hinged design but changed her mind after seeing a dark vision of herself in the ruins of the second Death Star. Before the Battle of Exegol, the droid D-O was rummaging through her workbench and nearly messed with the lightsaber but Finn, her friend and fellow Resistance member, stopped him.
After the Battle of Exegol, which ended the war, Rey went to Tatooine. She finished her single-bladed lightsaber and buried the lightsabers of Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa at the old Skywalker home. An old woman asked Rey who she was, and with Luke and Leia’s spirits watching, she called herself “Rey Skywalker.” The yellow lightsaber she made was to honor the Skywalker family.
The Meaning Behind Rey Skywalker’s Yellow Lightsaber
In the final moments of the film “The Rise of Skywalker”, Rey is shown with her yellow lightsaber which signifies many different meanings:
- The yellow lightsaber she made was to honor the Skywalker family.
- Rey’s yellow blade symbolizes her starting a new chapter in her life, breaking away from her past.
- It represents Rey’s ability to balance the different influences in her life. As the granddaughter of Palpatine who now takes the Skywalker name, she has harmonized these conflicting parts of her identity while staying true to the Jedi. This is similar to the Jedi Sentinel who balances wisdom and practical skills. Like the Sentinels, Rey isn’t afraid of hard work, she was a scavenger, after all.
- Similar to the Jedi Temple Guard, Rey now acts as the protector of the Jedi cause, not by guarding a physical place but by being the key figure in continuing the Jedi way.
5. Ahsoka Tano
Who is Ahsoka Tano?
Ahsoka Tano, a Togruta girl, was a Force-sensitive ex-Jedi who helped create a network of rebel groups against the Galactic Empire after the Clone Wars. Jedi Master Plo Koon found her on her home planet Shili and brought her to the Jedi Temple on Coruscant to train. When the Clone Wars started, Jedi Grand Master Yoda made her the Padawan of Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker.
Ahsoka became a strong fighter before the Empire’s reign changed everything. Even though she left the Jedi Order, she kept helping those who fought for peace and justice in the galaxy long after the Republic fell.
Ahsoka Tano wielded two different pairs of lightsabers. Her first pair featured a green blade and a shorter one with a yellow-green blade, while her second pair had white blades.
Ahsoka Tano’s Yellow Lightsaber
During the Clone Wars, Ahsoka wielded the first pair of lightsabers in an unorthodox reverse grip. The main lightsaber had a silver handle with black designs, and the shoto was a simpler version of the main lightsaber. Both lightsabers used kyber crystals from Ilum, enabling them to function underwater, as demonstrated during the Battle of Mon Cala. Before the Siege of Mandalore, Anakin Skywalker returned the lightsabers to Ahsoka with modifications, changing their blades to blue.
Ahsoka built the shoto lightsaber with a yellow-green blade after helping to rescue Chi Eekway Papanoida from the Separatists. She decided to learn Jar’Kai, the style of fighting with two lightsabers, and traveled to Ilum for a second kyber crystal. Grand Master Yoda provided her with additional training in lightsaber combat.
6. Asajj Ventress
Who is Asajj Ventress?
Asajj Ventress was a Force-sensitive female from Dathomir. Throughout her life, she had many roles: a Nightsister, a Jedi Padawan, a Dark Jedi, a military commander for the Confederacy of Independent Systems and a bounty hunter. She was born during the last years of the Galactic Republic to a clan of Nightsister witches led by Mother Talzin on Dathomir.
When she was a baby, her clan had to give her to the criminal Hal’Sted, who took her to the war-torn planet Rattatak where she became his slave. After Hal’Sted was killed by Weequay pirates, Jedi Knight Ky Narec who was stuck on Rattatak and fighting the pirates, found her and took her in.
As she grew, Count Dooku trained her in the dark side of the Force. Ventress secretly worked as Dooku’s apprentice, yearning to be considered a true Sith. During the Clone Wars, she fought for the Separatists and clashed with Jedi like Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker. However, when Dooku was ordered to dispose of her and left her for dead, Ventress returned to her Nightsister clan to seek revenge. Eventually, she reinvented herself as a bounty hunter reclaiming her identity as neither a Sith nor a Jedi.
Asajj Ventress’s lightsabers changed as her allegiances shifted. As a Padawan, she used a green lightsaber. Later, when she served the Sith Lord Count Dooku, she used two red curved-hilt lightsabers, similar in design to Dooku’s own weapon. After being betrayed by Count Dooku, Ventress felt lost and began searching for a new purpose and identity. During this period, she obtained a yellow lightsaber from the black market.
Asajj Ventress ’s Yellow Lightsaber
Ventress’s yellow lightsaber had a simple cylindrical hilt. The power cell was at the bottom, beneath a ridged grip. The ignition switch was located just above the grip, covering the hilt up to the blade emitter.
The lightsaber’s design was interesting. The bottom part had a traditional ridged grip keeping the power cell safe. About three-fifths of the hilt was made of perforated metal exposing the inner workings of the blade. Despite this, the design protected the weapon from moisture damage. The glowing center of the lightsaber looked both exposed and protected making it a powerful weapon. This design mirrored Ventress’s own complex and resilient nature.
Ventress got this lightsaber from the black market after Padawan Barriss Offee stole the ones she had used while working for Count Dooku. Getting a new lightsaber helped her move on from her past as Dooku’s apprentice. She used this yellow lightsaber for the rest of her time as a bounty hunter. After she died on Christophsis, her lightsaber was buried with her on Dathomir.

Early in the war, he went on a mission to find the Separatist warship Malevolence. After several tries, Koon and other Jedi destroyed the ship. He often worked with Ahsoka Tano whom he had discovered before the war and shared a special bond with.
Koon played important roles in the battles of Felucia, Lola Sayu and Kadavo. During the war, Ahsoka was wrongly accused of bombing the Jedi Temple and was expelled from the Jedi Order. When the real culprit was found, Koon and the Council invited her to return, but she decided to leave the Order.
In the final days of the Clone Wars, after the battles of Coruscant and Utapau, Plo Koon led the 442nd Siege Battalion in the Battle of Cato Neimoidia. After winning the battle, he was flying over the bridge cities with a group of ARC-170 starfighters, this happened during Order 66 when Jedi were killed all over the galaxy. Later, he constructed his own blue lightsaber after joining the Jedi Praxeum.
Kyle Katarn’s Yellow Lightsaber (Yun’s Lightsaber)
This yellow lightsaber was made by the Dark Jedi Yun. It had a modified pistol grip designed to fit the shape of a human hand with a place for the index finger to rest. The grip was made from a flexible polymer that adjusted to the user’s hand creating a solid and highly customized grip.
After being captured and taken aboard Jerec’s flagship, the Vengeance, Qu Rahn stole the yellow lightsaber and briefly used it to fight off Jerec’s Dark Jedi. He managed to defeat Maw before Jerec overpowered him.
The lightsaber then returned to Yun’s possession, who used it in his intense fight against Katarn on Sulon, but then Yun made a noble sacrifice using the lightsaber one last time to save Katarn’s life when another of Jerec’s followers, Sariss, tried to kill Katarn after his crash on Ruusan, with Yun’s sacrifice, his lightsaber passed into Katarn’s hands.
Katarn kept using Yun’s yellow lightsaber for the rest of his mission against Jerec’s Dark Jedi, he defeated Sariss, Boc Aseca and finally Jerec. However, when Katarn briefly fell to the dark side of the Force, he also used this weapon, a reminder that all Jedi walk a fine line between light and dark.
